Movement To Stop 'Manspreading' On Public Transit Reaches San Francisco
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – On public transit, every inch of available space counts. A movement to stop "manspreading" on crowded trains in New York City is now making its way to San Francisco.
"Manspreading is when men take up too much room on the subway by spreading their legs in a wide V. Like geese traveling," actress and anti-manspreading activist Kelley Rae O'Donnell told CBS New York.
Transit officials in the Big Apple are set to launch a campaign to stop the practice. One of the signs says, "Stop the spread, please. It's a space issue."
Muni spokesperson Paul Rose said, "Since the stories have run nationwide, we have seen comments on social media and other ways, that people are concerned about manspreading."
Rose said the system is about to take a survey of what riders do and don't like and expects to hear about the practice.
There are no penalties for manspreading in New York, but women have begun tweeting photos to shame offenders.
