Mountain View City Council Declaring Water Shortage

MOUNTAIN VIEW (KCBS) — Car washes and water served at restaurants may soon be a thing of the past as the Mountain View City Council is likely to declare a "Stage 1" water shortage emergency on Tuesday, due to the state's ongoing drought.

The emergency act will authorize city staff to increase efforts to educate the public about conservation programs and prohibited nonessential water uses, including serving water in a restaurant— except upon request—and washing a vehicle with a running hose.

Currently, Mountain View receives about 87 percent of its potable water from the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, which recently asked it's customers in that city to reduce water usage by ten percent.

"We're asking for everyone to pitch in. Some people can do more than others: taking a shorter shower, turn of the faucet when you brush your teeth. Every little bit helps," SFPUC General Manager Harlan Kelly said.

A study on an expansion of the city's recycled water system will also be discussed.
