Mississippi TV News Anchor Advises LGBT Community To Take A 'Gaycation'
BILOXI, Miss. (CBS SF) -- A Mississippi TV news anchor is under fire for a Facebook post saying the LGBT community has "been in the news too much lately" and should "go on gaycation."
WLOX anchor David Elliot – who the station lists on its website as the "only WLOX anchor on the air seven days a week" - has apologized for the post which has since disappeared from his Facebook page (but a screenshot of it was published by Jim Romenesko):
"I'm all for the LGBT community's ongoing fight for equality. I support their fight in every way. But, it seems like they've been in the news too much lately. Maybe they should take a short break. Go on gaycation,.. [sic] just for the weekend. Enjoy yourselves!"
A later post on Elliot's Facebook page was copied by WLOX in its response to comments on the station Facebook page according to GulfLive.com:
"I recently made an insensitive and unprofessional Facebook post regarding the LGBT community. I did not choose my words wisely and I sincerely apologize to anyone who was offended by it. I've advocated for justice and equality my entire life. I hope this heartfelt apology is accepted in the spirit in which it is being made."
WLOX said on the station Facebook page that "we are not happy at all with the post or any imagined 'free publicity'" generated by the post.
