Migrating Newts Bring 5-Month Road Closure On South Park Drive In Tilden Park
OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- South Park Drive in Tilden Park will be closed to motor vehicle traffic from Oct. 31 through March, 2015 to protect newts during their migrating and breeding season -- an annual closure that began in 1993.
A post on the East Bay Regional Park District website notes that bicycles will be allowed on the road but cyclists are asked to proceed slowly to avoid newts crossing the road.
This year, dogs will be permitted to run free but owners are advised to carry a leash and must be in control of their pets at all times. This policy is a return to normal after last season during which dogs were required to be leashed -- a requirement that was met with stiff opposition from dog owners at the time.
