Medical Emergency Causes Fire At San Leandro Apartment

SAN LEANDRO (CBS SF) -- A fire at an apartment building in San Leandro apparently resulted from an elderly resident's medical emergency.

The one-alarm fire was reported at an apartment building on the 1600 block of 150th Ave. in San Leandro.

A spokesperson for the Alameda County Fire Department said an elderly woman who lived in one of the units suffered a cardiac episode with a pot on the stove. The woman, described as being in her 70s, became incapacitated and the lit stove ended up starting a fire, according to the spokesperson.

The apartment's fire alarm was activated and prompted a response from fire crews, who put out the flames and began CPR on the victim.

The woman was said to have no pulse when firefighters arrived, but she was revived and had a pulse when loaded onto the ambulance. Her condition was unknown.

No other injuries were reported.
