McDonald's Recalls 2.5 Million 'Hello Kitty' Whistles Sold With Happy Meals Due To Choking Hazard

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- McDonald's has recalled 2.5 million plastic Hello Kitty whistles distributed in Happy Meals and Mighty Kids Meals. There have been reports of children coughing out pieces of the whistle they sucked into their mouths. One child needed medical attention according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The red and white whistles can be used to make sounds by both inhaling and exhaling through the mouthpiece.

The package bears the text, "Hello Kitty Birthday Lollipop," and there is a picture of Hello Kitty's face is on both sides of the whistle.

The whistles were distributed from October 2014 through the first week of November 2014, in the U.S. and in Canada.

McDonald's said consumers should immediately take the whistle away from children and return it to any McDonald's. They will be given a free replacement toy, along with a yogurt tube or a bag of apple slices.
