Mavericks On For Friday – Watch Live Online With CBS SF

HALF MOON BAY (CBS SF) - Surf fans hoping to watch the premier big wave contest in the country will again have to find an alternate to watching live from the coast at Pillar Point.

The bluffs above the break and entrance to the beach are closed - for safety reasons, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff's office. The event has been closed to public viewing since the award ceremony was washed out by a rogue wave after the 2010 surf-off.

For people in the area, a viewing screen is being set up at Oceano Hotel and Spa on Capistrano Road, just across from the Mavericks breaks. But for those who don't want to make the drive, CBS San Francisco will stream the event from our helicopter. The contest is set to begin at 8 a.m., with our chopper coverage beginning soon after on our live video link.

A field of 24 surfers from around the world have been invited to take part.
