Matt Cain Reportedly Mulling Season-Ending Surgery
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – The Giants and Matt Cain are reportedly considering an arthroscopic procedure on his pitching elbow that would likely shut down the ace for the remainder of the 2014 season.
CSN Bay Area's Andrew Baggarly reports that Cain was given a second opinion by famed surgeon Dr. James Andrews on Wednesday. Andrews apparently confirmed that the righty needs bone chips and debris cleaned out of his elbow. The procedure would likely force him to shut down for the remainder of the year.
The good news is that Cain does not require Tommy John surgery, the ligament replacement procedure for which Andrews is best known.
Cain, 29, was placed on the disabled list July 21, retroactive to July 11, due to ongoing elbow issues. He's struggled this season with 4.18 ERA in 90 1/3 innings of work.
