Man Who Forages In San Francisco Bay Carries Lemon Wedge To Snack On Raw Shellfish

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- Kirk Lombard walks the walk. The guy who says we should be eating more of the small fishes that live in San Francisco Bay carries a lemon in his pocket when he goes fishing, just so he can snack on raw shellfish.

"Even sometimes a little bottle of soy sauce. I pop a couple limpets off the rock and it's like my appetizer," Lombard said.

He runs a community-supported fishery called Sea Forager, a service with subscribers who get a weekly delivery of local, sustainable seafood. It forces customers to try eating lower on the food chain and to consider small species like herring.

"It would be way better if the human race was taking small fish and eating them. You have to embrace the concept that this thing's gonna taste like a fish," Lombard said.

Herring are spawning in San Francisco Bay this time of year, and fishermen are still finding mackerel.

"In the middle of the winter which is like, has the world gone mad? That's not a winter fishery here," Lombard said.
