Man Electrocuted While Trying To Steal Copper At Abandoned Oakland Pipe Factory
OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- A man was killed by electrocution in West Oakland Wednesday night after apparently attempting to steal copper wiring, police said.
Officers responded to a medical call at the Pacific Pipe Company factory in the 2200 block of Mandela Parkway near West Grand Avenue around 8:30 p.m., police said.
A male victim was found electrocuted and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Oakland Police Lt. Brandon Wehrly.
The victim suffered major burns consistent with handling live high voltage wires.
After a preliminary investigation it appears that the victim was attempting to steal the old factory's copper wiring. The factory has been vacant for years, according to Wehrly.
The Alameda County coroner's bureau also responded to the scene.
