Man Shot By CHP Officer After East Bay Chase Charged With Several Felonies

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY (CBS SF) -- A man who was shot by a California Highway Patrol officer after leading officers on a chase from Pittsburg to Pacheco last month has gone from the hospital to jail and has been charged with several felonies, a Contra Costa County sheriff's spokesman said Monday.

Terry Ferguson, 29, of Brentwood, left John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek on Thursday after being treated for gunshot wounds and was booked into Contra Costa County jail in Martinez, according to sheriff's spokesman Jimmy Lee.

Lee said CHP officers tried to pull Ferguson over for a traffic violation around 9:30 p.m. on June 28 but he drove away, leading them on a pursuit into Martinez.

At one point, the suspect stopped to let his 7-year-old son out of the car, then rammed a CHP patrol car and tried to hit a Martinez police vehicle, Lee said.

The boy was uninjured and is safe, Lee said.

The chase ended a short time later when the suspect crashed into a telephone pole and a parked car near Pacheco Boulevard and Falling Star Drive in Pacheco.

Lee said Ferguson exited the car, placed his hands in his waistband and refused to comply with officers' commands.

A CHP officer feared for his life and shot the suspect, the spokesman said.

Ferguson was taken to the hospital and arrested.

The Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office charged Ferguson with evading police, possession of drugs for sale, child endangerment, illegal firearm possession and for having a loaded firearm in his vehicle, Lee said.

The officer-involved shooting is being investigated by the sheriff's and district attorney's offices and the CHP.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call sheriff's detectives at (925) 313-2600.
