Man Resists Armed Robbery In Oakland, Gets Shot, Kills Gunman

OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- A 20-year-old suspect who tried to rob an 18-year-old man at gunpoint in East Oakland on Wednesday afternoon was killed when the younger man fired back at him in self-defense, police said Friday.

The man who was killed was identified by police as 20-year-old Nakia Polk of Oakland.

Police said Polk confronted the 18-year-old man, who he didn't know, in the area of 23rd Avenue and East 26th Street at 2:18 p.m. on Wednesday, pointed a gun at him and tried to rob him.

Polk shot the 18-year-old when the younger man resisted but the 18-year-old was able to pull out a gun and shoot Polk, according to police.

Polk was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 18-year-old man, an Oakland resident whose name hasn't been released by police, was shot multiple times and was transported to a local hospital, where he's in critical but stable condition, according to police.

Police are continuing to investigate the shooting.
