Man Killed, His Family Hospitalized After Richmond Crash

RICHMOND (CBS SF) -- A man died and his family was hospitalized after the car he was driving crashed in Richmond Saturday evening, police said Sunday.

On Saturday, at 6:20 p.m., officers responded to a solo vehicle crash on Regatta Boulevard near South 34th Street, Lt. Arnold Threets said.

Threets said emergency crews used hydraulic rescue tools, also known as Jaws of Life, to free several occupants trapped inside the vehicle.

Threets said the man and his family were returning from church services in South San Francisco.

He was transported with critical injuries to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, where he later died sometime that night, Threets said.

The four other occupants were transported to various hospitals, but Threets said he did not know the extent of their injuries.

The cause of the crash is under investigation, Threets said.

The man's identity was not immediately available Sunday evening.
