24 Year-Old Man Arrested After Botched Burglary, Stabbing Injures Santa Clara Homeowner

SANTA CLARA (CBS SF) -- Santa Clara police are investigating whether a man arrested early Thursday morning in a stabbing and burglary was also responsible for stabbing a woman in her vehicle about 45 minutes earlier.

The incident was first reported around 3 a.m. in the 3100 block of Cabrillo Avenue when a man entered the kitchen through a window trying to burglarize a house, waking up some of the residents in the process.

A female and a 54-year-old man residing in the home confronted the suspect, later identified as Ignacio Aguilar Maldonado, 24, who then attacked and stabbed the man several times before fleeing, police said.

Maldonado fled the scene, but it didn't take long before police surrounded the area and found him hiding in the bushes. Maldonado did not put up a fight, according to police.

The homeowner was taken to a nearby hospital with a couple of stab wounds while the suspect remains in custody as police continue their investigation.

Police also are investigating whether Maldonado is the suspect in an assault that occurred at about 2:15 a.m. today on Calabazas Boulevard just north of El Camino Real in Santa Clara.

A suspect, described as a Hispanic man in his 20s with a light complexion and wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, came up to a 49-year-old woman who was sleeping in her vehicle, Clarke said.

After the man knocked on the window, the woman opened it and the suspect reached inside and stabbed her, the lieutenant said.

The suspect ran off when the woman screamed for help. The victim then drove herself to a hospital and is expected to survive, according to Clarke.
