Woman Fatally Struck By Tractor-Trailer On Interstate 880 In Oakland

OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- A female pedestrian who was on Interstate Highway 880 in Oakland for an unknown reason Tuesday morning was killed when she was struck by a Coca-Cola truck, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The fatal collision occurred near the 98th Avenue exit on northbound I-880 at about 4:20 a.m. Tuesday and forced the northbound lanes to be closed until about 6:15 a.m., CHP officials said.

Officers who responded to calls that a person was lying on the roadway found the woman lying in the fourth lane from the left, CHP spokesman Sean Wilkenfeld said.

The woman had suffered major injuries and Oakland firefighters tried to render aid to her, but she was pronounced dead at the scene, Wilkenfeld said.

The tractor-trailer that struck the woman stopped at the scene on the right shoulder, he said.

Investigators are trying to determine how the woman came to be on the freeway, Wilkenfeld said.

The CHP is asking any witnesses who may have seen anything unusual this morning on the 98th Avenue overpass or on I-880 near the 98th Avenue exit to call their Oakland office at (510) 450-3821 or a non-emergency public access line at (800) 835-5247.

An Alameda County coroner's bureau spokesman said this afternoon that authorities have a good idea of who the woman was but are still in the process of confirming her identity.
