Magnitude 6.7 Quake Strikes Southwest Of New Zealand

TASMAN SEA (CBS SF) -- A strong magnitude 6.7 earthquake has struck in the far South Pacific Ocean hundreds of miles southwest of New Zealand, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake, which occurred Friday morning at about 9:45 a.m. local time, was centered about 13.6 miles west-southwest from the Macquarie Island, a land mass approximately halfway between New Zealand and Antarctica.

The quake had a depth of approximately 6.2 miles. So far, there is no word of any damage or of an associated tsunami warning.
