Two Magnitude 5.0+ Earthquakes Strike Off Humboldt County Coast

HUMBOLDT COUNTY (KPIX 5) -- Two moderate earthquakes struck about 100 miles off the Humboldt County coast within one hour of each other Thursday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The USGS reports that a magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck at 8:39 a.m., with the epicenter in the Pacific Ocean about 100 miles west of the community of Capetown, at a depth of 3 miles.

Shortly after the first earthquake, the National Tsunami Warning Center said a tsunami was not expected.

A second earthquake, a magnitude 5.0, struck the same area at 9:24 a.m.

Visitors to the USGS website from the Eureka area reported light shaking from both earthquakes. There is no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
