Brentwood Dog Walkers Injured After Separate Attacks By Loose Sharpei-Pit Bull Mix, Labrador

BRENTWOOD (CBS SF) -- Two Brentwood residents walking their dogs Thursday morning were injured in separate attacks by a pair of loose dogs, a police sergeant said.

A 52-year-old woman was walking her dog in the 4600 block of Nunn Street around 9:30 a.m. when a Sharpei-pit bull mix and black Labrador retriever that had gotten loose from a home in the same block attacked, Brentwood police Sgt.  Mark Misquez said.

The woman - identified by KPIX 5 as Carolyn Wax - reported that one of the two dogs bit her repeatedly in the face, hand and ankle, Misquez said.

Less than 10 minutes later, officers responded to a report of a second attack involving the same dogs about a block away in the 3000 block of Hudson Drive, according to Misquez.

The sergeant said a 46-year-old man walking his two small dogs reported that the dogs attacked his animals and when he tried to protect them, the Sharpei-pit bull mix bit him in the calf.

Both victims were taken to hospitals to be treated for minor to moderate injuries.

Misquez said officers were able to catch the Labrador retriever but struggled to catch the other dog, which ran through the neighborhood, prompting police to advise a nearby preschool to shelter in place.

Police and Contra Costa Animal Services officers were able to contain the dog in a backyard, where it charged at them, the sergeant said.

Officers then had to use a Taser to subdue the dog, he said.

Animal Services officers took custody of that dog and the Labrador, and were investigating the attacks.

The dogs' owners were not at home at the time and the animals appear to have escaped an enclosed backyard, Misquez said.

EDITOR'S NOTE:  Police initially identified the breed of the Sharpei mix as a pit bull, and this story originally referred to the animal as a pit bull before officers gave out updated information on the breed.  It is now confirmed that it is a pit bull - Sharpei mix.
