Loose Chicken Halts Traffic At The Bay Bridge Toll Plaza

(CBS SF) -- A chicken was spotted crossing the Bay Bridge toll plaza Wednesday morning, quickly drawing up many punchlines.

How or why it ended up there is a question that could send us into eternity. Instead, here's what we know so far.

KCBS Traffic first reported one chicken was running around the Fastrak lanes near the Toll Plaza at about 5:50 a.m.

An update came about 30 minutes later notifying drivers that there's more than just one running around, and technically speaking, they're hens.

The last sighting of the hens came in at about 7:30 a.m. Their fate remains unknown at this time.

UPDATE 9:12 a.m.: Caltrans  said they are letting the chicken run around since it's safer than putting a crew member in traffic to catch it.

"Let CHP find out why the chickens crossed the road," the California Highway Patrol tweeted. "It's not worth getting hit!"

UPDATE 10:10 a.m.: "The felonious foul is now in custody," CHP tweets.

CHP says it took the small, brown chicken to a veterinarian for a checkup.
