Longtime Waterfront Restaurant In San Francisco Told To Leave

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- Sinbad's, a San Francisco waterfront restaurant that has been an institution since the 1970s, is being told to clear out by March 21.

LISTEN:

For decades Sinbad's has sat out on Pier 2 behind the Ferry Building with its spectacular views of the Bay Bridge and slightly-less-so reviews for the food. It's received food safety warnings from the Health Department, caused several sewage leaks into the Bay and has been late on rent.

But the Port of San Francisco, the restaurant's landlord, now says it stands in the way of a new ferry terminal expansion by the San Francisco Conservation and Development Commission, which oversees the waterfront, and wants the pier demolished by the end of March.

According to the San Francisco Examiner, the city also wants to improve ways of evacuating people on the water in case a disaster closes down the Bay Bridge or the BART Transbay Tube. Construction isn't supposed to begin until next year which is why Sinbad's co-owner, Tom Stinson is seeking a way to stay a little longer.

The Port has wanted the restaurant to leave for years. The owners agreed to leave back in 2012 but were given extension to the end of last December and then another to this March. The Port is reluctant to extend it again.

Between 32-48 people could lose their jobs unless Sinbad's gets a reprieve or can relocate.
