Lockdown Lifted At San Francisco Bayview District School Following Shooting

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – An elementary school was locked down Thursday afternoon following a shooting that occurred nearby.

San Francisco police said the shooting was reported at about 1:40 p.m. on Hawes Street near Gilman Avenue. Officer Albie Esparza said that prompted a shelter-in-place at Bret Harte Elementary School, which is located on Gilman.

The lockdown was lifted at about 3:00 p.m.

Esparza said a 28-year-old man was shot and injured in the incident. He was taken to San Francisco General Hospital and is expected to survive.

Police were searching the area for the suspect, including going door-to-door, but Esparza said investigators have scaled back that search.  The suspect remains at large.

A San Francisco Unified School District spokeswoman said students, teachers and staff on campus were unharmed during the lockdown.
