LGBT Leather-Themed Parklet In The Works For San Francisco SoMa
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- A plan is in the works for a parklet in San Francisco's South of Market neighborhood that would celebrate the area's historic ties to the LGBT and leather communities.
According to the Bay Area Reporter, a developer of a new mixed-use housing and retail development is backing a proposal to turn part of a 12th Street between Harrison and Bernice into a leather-themed pedestrian plaza.
Eagle Plaza, as it would be called in relation to the nearby former Eagle Tavern, would be a public space and is within an area designated by the city as an LGBT cultural heritage district.
While the report says preliminary designs show a traffic lane could be maintained on 12th Street for both residents and emergency vehicles, the proposal would also eliminate 15 parking spaces.
Visitors can expect spots for food trucks and a sitting area that resemble bar benches and a jungle gym.
As far as color schemes, the B.A.R. says you may see the colors of the "leather flag", which happen to be blue, black, white and red to embellish a mini deck area.
Backers of the plaza have been meeting since September to bounce around ideas for the parklet. A rendering and design will be unveiled to the public at both an Eagle beer bust this weekend and at a public meeting next week.
