Levi's Stadium Turf Ripped Up Again As Crews Prepare Permanent 49er Playing Field

SANTA CLARA (CBS SF) - It's out with the new - again - this week at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara.

The 49ers have played just two games in their new home and yet the team is already getting a third playing surface at the South Bay stadium.

Last week the team ripped out the playing field portion of the turf after loose sod and fear of injuries prompted Head Coach Jim Harbaugh to cancel practice on the field. A thick, temporary sod was put down for Sunday's game against San Diego.

No major issues were reported during that game, but the team has since removed the entire lawn so that the permanent, uniform grass can take hold.

The team returns to Levi's for their first-ever regular season game there on September 14th.
