Latest Quakes Have East Bay Residents Pleading 'That's Enough' On Social Media

CONCORD (CBS SF) - It's been an unsettling week for East Bay residents who live fear of a major quake.

Since Sunday, the area has been hit by a swarm of small quakes, many of them strong enough to feel.

On Sunday, the U.S. Geological Survey initially reported an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.0 at 2:13 p.m. That quake was later downgraded to a 3.6 by the USGS. It was centered a mile south of Concord, along the Concord fault.

"A four's just sort of a nice little warning that you're dealing with something that has the potential to be bigger," USGS Seismologist Dr. David Schwartz said.

As of Tuesday, another 8 smaller quakes, up to magnitude 3.0, had hit the area following the larger earthquake.

On Wednesday, three more quakes - ranging from 2.6 to 3.5 - hit within 30 minutes of each other. That sent scores of people who felt the shaking to social media asking Mother Nature to cut it out.

If only your Twitter followers had the power to stop the rumbling.

The USGS estimates there's a 3 to 4 percent probability of a magnitude-6.7 or higher earthquake striking on the Concord of lower Green Valley Fault in the next 30 years compared with 6.4 percent for the San Andreas and 14.3 percent for the Hayward Fault.
