Lafayette City Leaders Considering Rent-Increase Moratorium In Possible First Step Toward Rent Control

LAFAYETTE (CBS SF) -- Rents are soaring in Lafayette, and complaints from residents are prompting city leaders to consider a moratorium on increases.

Renters in one complex say neighbor after neighbor are getting notices of hefty rent increases from the new owner.

"It was fourteen-thirty to now twenty-seven-something," tenant John Marzione said.

Lafayette city leaders are taking notice, and considering what would be a first in Contra Costa County – a moratorium on raising rents, and a possible first step toward rent control.

"It's really sad, and it's having an impact on some of the people in our community," Lafayette City Manager Steven Falk said.

San Francisco-based Sack Properties now owns the complex where Marzione lives, and did not respond to a request for comment.

The city council will consider the moratorium on May 11th.
