Just In Time For New Year's Eve: New App Released To Find Bars, Clubs That Have Benefits For Designated Drivers

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) — Designated drivers will be getting some appreciation this New Year's Eve as new mobile app, offered by state traffic safety officials, will indicate which bars have special perks for the sober drivers who've volunteered to keep their friends safe.

So you're planning to hit the town and do some partying and if you're smart you're either taking a cab or you have designated a driver.

The sober driver is often overlooked, however, but thanks to new first-of-its-kind mobile app being rolled out by the California Office of Traffic Safety this week, that's about to change.

Chris Cochran, OTS spokesman told KCBS said it's called the DDVIP, or Designated Driver VIP, and that it allows users to locate participating bars and restaurants on mobile map display.

"They'll get free non-alcoholic drinks—maybe even free cover charge, or free appetizers," he said.

Max Dibble, manager of San Francisco's Pier 23 Café along the Embarcadero told KCBS that he thinks it's important to reward those who keep bar patrons safe.

"They are a very important person because they are kind of facilitating the fun—right?" he said.

The DDVIP app is now available for free download on iOS and Android devices. Originally launched in 2013 as a mobile-friendly website DDVIPCA.com, the new DDVIP app offers enhanced features, allowing users to "Mapa Spot" with their current location to find DDVIP partnering establishments in their area or a "List of Spots" to search all participating bars and restaurants throughout California.
