Jury Selection Underway In Civil Case Against Dodgers Over Bryan Stow Beating

LOS ANGELES (CBS/AP) - Jury selection has begun in Los Angeles for the trial of a lawsuit over the beating of San Francisco Giants fan Bryan Stow at Dodger Stadium after the April 2011 opening day game between the rival teams.

Stow watched from a wheelchair Tuesday as prospective jurors were instructed to fill out questionnaires. The paramedic from Santa Cruz suffered disabling brain damage in the beating, for which two men pleaded guilty to criminal charges earlier this year.

The civil liability and negligence suit seeks millions of dollars in damages from the Los Angeles Dodgers and former owner Frank McCourt.

Lawyers have estimated that Stow's lifetime care could cost $50 million. Stow's family provides updates on his condition and takes donations for his care online at www.support4bryanstow.com

In February, Marvin Norwood and Louie Sanchez pled guilty to the attack. Norwood, 32, pleaded guilty to assault by means likely to produce great bodily injury while the 31-year-old Sanchez pleaded guilty to a felony count of mayhem. Sanchez was sentenced to eight years in prison, with credit for about three years served. Norwood got a four year sentence.
