Jan Wahl Movie Reviews: 'Tammy' And 'Yves Saint Laurent'

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)--KCBS Entertainment Editor Jan Wahl reviews "Tammy," a road-trip buddy comedy with a woman (Melissa McCarthy) having a bad day along with her alcoholic grandmother (Susan Sarandon). Also reviewed is the biopic "Yves Saint Laurent," about the famed French fashion designer.

TAMMY (R) 96 min

"Tammy" is about a girl having a bad day; she's lost her job, her marriage and gets stuck with her alcoholic grandmother. Tammy is a flawed but fun character and McCarthy plays her angry and vulnerable—it's not easy do both but she goes all the way and does it well.

Much like a John Candy or Will Farrell film, this nutty comedy, directed by McCarthy's husband Ben Falcone, is tailor made for women.

I know "Tammy" has received some harsh reviews from critics but it's much better than a lot of the gross-out comedies I've seen this year. This is a hilarious film to grab your girlfriends and have a great time.

YVES SAINT LAURENT (R) 126 min

There have been great films about designers such as "Valentino: The Last Emperor" (2008) and while "Yves Saint Laurent" is not as good, anyone who knows or cares about fashion will not want to miss it.

This film directed by Jalil Lespert reveals much about Saint Laurent's sex life—I think I learned more about that than his fashion. But it certainly tells the story about what happened to this man, who led the house of Christian Dior and then eventually started his own successful house.
