Investigators Say Sonoma State University Homicide Not Random

ROHNERT PARK (KPIX 5) -- Friends of an 18-year-old man who was found dead at the Sonoma State University campus describe him as likeable and well-loved.

Sonoma County sheriff's deputies said Thursday night the body found is that of Kirk Kimberly, who has been missing since October 17.

His friends say that if someone was out to get him, they have no idea why.

The Sonoma County Sheriff's Office hasn't provided any information on that either but said they don't believe the homicide was a random act.

Abigail O'Gorman, a former coworker of Kimberly said, "He was a standup person, nice, and its just devastating to hear this happened to him."

His family says he left home on his bike and was never seen again.

They put up flyers and posted all over Facebook.

His mom even went to his old high school looking for answers.

But even now, answers are few and far between.

Sonoma County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Spencer Crum said, "the coroner knows the cause" but that they're not releasing that information right now.

While deputies haven't named a suspect, they say it wasn't random and they were back out at the crime scene Friday looking for evidence to prove it.

"Right now we are retracing his final steps...who he might have been visiting with," Crum said.

The Rohnert Park and Cotati school districts offered their condolences to this family and said they are offering grief counseling to their students or their faculty who are affected by his death.
