Bomb Squad: Burning Backpack That Halted Traffic On I-280 Posed 'No Threat'

REDWOOD CITY (CBS SF) -- Northbound Interstate Highway 280 reopened after the San Mateo County Sheriff's bomb squad was called out to investigate a suspicious backpack fire that stopped traffic for hours Thursday evening, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The fire was first reported around 6:43 p.m. on northbound Highway 280 near Edgewood Road.

After the fire was extinguished, the backpack needed to be x-rayed to ensure that it could be safely removed from the roadway, according to the CHP.

A Sig-alert was issued at 7:04 p.m. for all northbound lanes of the roadway.

At 8:08 p.m. the CHP reported that no threat to the public had been found in the backpack and all lanes of the roadway had reopened.
