Internet Security Researcher Says Millions Of CA Voters' Information Was Exposed

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- The names, addresses and phone numbers millions of California voters may have been exposed in a database discovered by an online security expert.

Researcher Chris Vickery reported the database to Databreaches.net., an online security website that focuses on breaches of this kind.

The database contained the information of over 17 million California voters, according to Vickery.

In all, there were more than 191 million Americans' voter information -- full names, dates of birth, addresses and phone numbers, political affiliation and voting history since 2000. There were no Social Security numbers, driver's license numbers, or financial information.

Vickery said the database was no longer publicly available as of Monday night.

NationBuilder, a company that makes voter information available to political campaigns and non-profits said the database was not theirs. The company's CEO Jim Gilliam released a statement Monday saying, "It is possible that some of the information it contains may have come from data we make available for free to campaigns."

Meantime, the FBI and California Attorney General have been alerted.

California Secretary of State Alex Padilla said the database was not posted by the state and he is working with the Attorney General to verify the claims.
