Intel Pledges $5 Million To Oakland Schools For STEM, Computer Science Program
OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- Intel has pledged $5 million over the next five years to create a pilot project Oakland schools that will produce hundreds of computer scientists.
The Santa Clara-based company will work with students at Oakland Tech and McClymonds, providing computers, developing curriculum, and training teachers.
The program aims to send 600 graduates on to college computer science engineering programs. These 'Intel Scholars' will get scholarships, and eventual internships and jobs at Intel.
"We want parents to know: if you encourage kids going into this field, there is a job waiting for them," Intel's chief diversity officer Rosalind Hudnell told USA Today.
Intel's CEO Brian Krzanich said the company has wanted to do something in K-12 education targeting underrepresented minorities. "We thought we should start in our own backyard."
If successful, the program could become model for other schools and tech companies around the nation.
