Injured Foal Rescued From Fremont Ravine Finds New Home
ORLAND (CBS SF) -- A young horse rescued from a ravine in Fremont last month has gotten a new home in Orland, according to police.
A woman who lives in Orland, a small town west of Chico, has adopted the colt after his original owner gave him up to the City of Fremont.
"Valentine" is still recovering from injuries after falling 150 feet into Morrison Canyon last month.
Only six days old when he was rescued by firefighters and animal service personnel on February 14, the colt was named in honor of the romantic holiday on which he was saved.
The injured Valentine was moved to the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine for treatment two days after the rescue, where the colt was diagnosed with a fracture in a non-weight bearing portion of his pelvis.
The Fremont Police Department and a Burlingame resident set up a crowd-funding effort to cover the cost of caring for Valentine, collecting over $15,000 in the space of just a few days.
Officials met with Valentine's original owner and, after an extended meeting discussing the foal's medical condition and future needs, the owner decided to surrender the young horse to Fremont.
Valentine's new owner has set up a Facebook page so people can continue to follow the colt's recovery.
Judging from video posted to the Facebook page, Valentine's recovery is coming along well.
