Startup Firm Developing Pistol That Looks Like A Smartphone

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – A startup is developing a gun that resembles a smartphone when not in use, raising concerns among law enforcement.

Minnesota-based Ideal Conceal is developing the pistol, a .380-caliber double barreled derringer.

"Smartphones are everywhere, so your new pistol will easily blend in with today's environment. In its locked position it will be virtually undetectable because it hides in plain sight," according to the company's website.

The company also warned prospective buyers to check concealed carry laws where they live.

Ideal Conceal is not without its critics, particularly among police.

"In general, the concept of any kind of weapon that's disguised, so that it's not apparent that it's a weapon, would be cause for concern," Bill Johnson, executive director and general counsel for the National Association of Police Organizations told CNNMoney.

The pistol is expected to go on sale later this year.
