Hotel Room Set On Fire In Palo Alto Domestic Violence Spat

PALO ALTO (KCBS) -- Palo Alto Police have arrested a man accused of setting fire to a hotel room and later threatening officers with a knife.

Police got a call just before 9 p-m Tuesday of a fire at the Glass Slipper Inn on El Camino Real.  Crews arrived and found that the fire was coming from a single room on the second floor.

No one was in the room at the time and all the other guests were evacuated.  The fire was put out about a half-hour later.

An investigation revealed that the room had been rented by a woman, and her estranged husband, whom she had a no-contact domestic violence restraining order against, was in her room and arguing with her.  Police say the woman left and later received a call about the fire.

Police were able to get in contact with the woman's estranged husband, 22-year-old Miguel Gamero, in Mountain View and he pointed a knife at officers, threatening them to shoot him.  He was eventually taken into custody safely and is facing multiple charges.

25 people were evacuated due to the fire, with 11 receiving emergency overnight housing at the Cubberley Community Center in Palo Alto; the others worked out alternate overnight housing arrangements as the arson investigation continued.
