Historic Berkeley Pier Closes Due To Structural Damage

BERKELEY (CBS/AP) — The popular Berkeley municipal pier is closing after structural damage was found in its concrete deck and supports.

The Contra Costa Times reports that city staff members discovered the damage while checking the pier before Fourth of July festivities.

A memo from City Manager Christine Daniel to Mayor Tom Bates and City Council members sent Thursday says a consultant found concrete spalling, which is when the surface flakes and becomes pitted, and badly corroded structural rebar.

The city closed the pier to the public Wednesday and is looking into ways to repair portions of the pier.
