1 Killed, 1 Hurt in Fiery, Fatal Crash on Highway 24 in Orinda
ORINDA (CBS SF) -- One person was killed and another injured in a collision related to a police chase on Highway 24 in Orinda Saturday morning that closed all westbound lanes for nearly six hours.
As of 3:09 p.m., all lanes of westbound Highway 24 were open again.
An Orinda police officer tried to pull a car over near St. Stephens Drive and Tahos Road around 9 a.m., according to sheriff's officials. However, the car sped off and the officer pursued.
The car got onto westbound Highway 24, where the officer lost sight of the car but then found the car overturned on Highway 24 near the BART station, sheriff's officials said.
The car was engulfed in flames, according to the California Highway Patrol.
There were two people in the vehicle and they were given first aid. The pair was taken to a hospital, where one of them was pronounced dead, according to sheriff's officials.
The district attorney's office, the sheriff's office and the California Highway Patrol are investigating the incident. The officer-involved fatal incident protocol has been invoked, sheriff's officials said.
