Highway 101 Bypass Collapses in Willits; 3 Workers Injured

WILLITS (KCBS) -- Three construction workers were injured after a section of the Willits Highway 101 bypass project collapsed Thursday afternoon.

The Santa Rosa Press Democrat reports that workers were pouring concrete about 2 p.m. when large section came loose and collapsed.

A Caltrans spokesman told KCBS that that one of their contractors was briefly trapped underneath the debris but was quickly freed.

The collapsed bridge is part of the $210 million Highway 101 bypass Caltrans is constructing to re-route the highway around Willits.

The three workers were transported to a nearby hospital with mild-to-moderate injuries and an investigation to what caused the collapse is underway.

Willits Police are rerouting traffic on East Valley Road away from the area so that emergency crews can move about freely.
