UPDATE: Highway 1 Near Pacifica Open After Head-On SUV, Truck Crash Closes Road For Hours

PACIFICA (CBS SF) -- Highway 1 near Pacifica has reopened following a head-on collision late Thursday morning, the California Highway Patrol said.

A white SUV slammed into a garbage truck between Linda Mar Blvd. and the Tom Lantos Tunnels, closing both northbound and southbound lanes sometime around 11:30 a.m.

The circumstances surrounding the crash were not immediately available. The condition of the drivers was not known, but the CHP said the crash involved "major injury."

An image of the wrecked SUV showed the entire front end crumpled and air bags deployed.

The road was completely shut down for more than two hours, until Caltrans reopened the road to one-way traffic control shortly after 1:30 p.m. As of about 2:30 p.m., cleanup of the roadway by Caltrans crews was completed and both directions of Highway 1 were open.
