Health Clinic Opening In San Francisco's Bayview Neighborhood Expects 15,000 Visits Per Year

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- A new medical, dental and mental health care clinic in San Francisco's Bayview neighborhood will have its grand opening Thursday.

The Marin City Health and Wellness Center has been serving Marin's most impoverished community for ten years

CEO JayVon Muhammad says there are a lot of similarities between the two locations.

"Because it has historically been a community with disparities," Muhammad said.

This will be one of just two clinics that see adults in the Bayview, which Lead Physician Danielle Jackson says has one of the highest infant mortality rates of any California zip code.

"There is a higher percentage of asthma among children and adults. We'll probably see high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease," Jackson said.

The clinic has three doctors, and clinical psychologists like Cedric Jackson, who says many issues in the community are directly related to traumas people have experienced.

"And, that trauma could very well just be the cultural environment that they're in," Jackson said.

The clinic expects 15,000 visits a year.
