Hayward Police Pursue Armed Carjacking Suspect, Ends In I-880 Crash

HAYWARD (CBS SF) -- Hayward police were in pursuit of a vehicle involved in a carjacking when the suspect vehicle collided with five other vehicles on I-880 near Winton Ave. in Hayward, according to CHP.

Hayward police responded to an armed carjacking in which a female driver was kidnapped by the suspect at the 3900 block of Trust Way. They then chased the suspect, who entered I-880 NB.

CHP was called in to assist with the collision and subsequent traffic backup at around 5:55 p.m. Wednesday evening.

The kidnapping victim was injured and was transported to a nearby hospital with minor injuries, but no other motorists involved suffered injuries as a result of the collision. The suspect was then taken into custody.

Three vehicles remained on the right shoulder of the roadway as well as a large amount of broken glass, causing a severe traffic alert to be issued at around 7:00 p.m.

Police recovered the suspect's handgun in the vehicle.
