Hash Oil Lab May Have Caused San Leandro Homeless Encampment Explosion

SAN LEANDRO (KPIX 5) - Investigators say that an explosion near the railroad tracks in San Leandro Wednesday may have been the result of someone trying to make hash oil, eventually setting off a butane gas fire.

A hazmat team was at the scene off of Hesperian Blvd. overnight after the blaze, which ignited around 10 p.m.

After the explosion, two people ran screaming into a nearby house asking for water. They were listed in critical condition Wednesday morning.

"We're still trying to piece together exactly how the event unfolded," said Div. Chief Rob Schnepp of Alameda County Fire.

A third person was also hurt in the incident, but those injuries were not considered as serious.
