Marine Corps Says Marin County Gym Owner Is Not A Decorated War Vet

SAN RAFAEL (KPIX 5) – The House of Steel Gym is where Gregory Allen has molded men and women. His program here trains wannabe recruits and Allen claims he has helped 110 of them.

"He's been a stellar person in this community, He gets kids ready for boot camp," said Dan Thomas, a friend of Allen's.

Allen has long-identified himself as a retired Marine lieutenant, even wearing a Purple Heart at times. But now the Marines said they have no record of Allen being a Marine wounded at war.

"Those who actually earned them feel hurt, disappointed," former Marine John Campusano told KPIX 5.

Campusano said Allen is a friend, but if he has stolen valor, "Wearing uniforms and medals and not ever having earned them, it's an affront to veterans."

Off-camera, Allen told KPIX 5 that he's sorry if he's hurt anyone, but would not directly answer any questions or if he was ever a Marine, instead referring us to his lawyer.

The Marines said they have no control over whether Allen faces any criminal charges for possibly imitating a Marine officer. It would be up to federal or local prosecutors.
