Grass Fires Burn Hillside Along Highway 101 In Sausalito

SAUSALITO (CBS SF) -- Two vegetation fires burned along U.S. Highway 101 in Sausalito Tuesday afternoon, prompting some evacuations and shutting down southbound lanes of 101.

The Marin County Sheriff's Office urged people in the area of Wolfback Ridge and Cloud View on the west side of the highway to evacuate just before 1:00 p.m. The evacuation order was lifted about 30 minutes later.

Southbound 101 was shut down at Marin City to the Rodeo Ave. off-ramp as fire crews battled the fires. All lanes reopened on Tuesday evening, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Multiple fire agencies responded to the two vegetation fires, including Southern Marin Fire, Marin County Fire, and the Marin County Sheriff's Office, according to the county.

People were urged not to call 911 unless they were facing a life-threatening emergency, as dispatchers were said to be inundated with calls and were trying to reserve phone lines for emergencies.

The two separate fires had each burned roughly one to two acres in size, CHP officials said earlier Tuesday afternoon.

The blazes have been contained and crews are expected to stay at the scene overnight to mop up hot spots.
