Hit-&-Run Driver Involved In Crash With Google Self-Driving Car
LOS ALTOS (CBS SF) – A driver crashed into a Google self-driving vehicle in Los Altos last month and left the scene without exchanging information, according to a report filed with the California Department of Motor Vehicles.
The crash involving a Google self-driving car prototype took place around 3:30 p.m. on July 15th at the intersection of Cuesta Drive and Springer Road.
According to the accident report (.pdf), the self-driving car was stopped at the intersection when it was struck by a car from behind. The other car was reportedly traveling about 7 miles per hour at the time of the crash.
The self-driving car suffered minor damage to the rear hatch and rear sensor. It is unclear if the other vehicle, described only as a Mitsubishi in the report, suffered any damage.
No injuries were reported on the scene and police were notified of the incident.
Google self-driving vehicles have been involved in at least a dozen crashes since February of 2015, according to DMV records. The Mountain View-based tech giant has blamed nearly all the crashes on other drivers.
Only one of the crashes has been blamed on the self-driving car. In February, an autonomous vehicle struck a VTA transit bus carrying more than a dozen people. No injuries were reported in that crash.
