Google Donates $2 Million To Help Shelter Bay Area Homeless Families, Youth

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)— While San Francisco scrambled to bring homeless in from the rain, Google announced a $2 million donation Thursday that will go to three Bay Area nonprofits to help the fight for those struggling with homelessness.

Mayor Ed Lee was joined by city supervisors London Breed and Jane Kim for the company's philanthropic announcement. Lee promised he'd drill down on the problem.

"Homelessness is something that has not gone away there is no one ideal solution, no one 10-year program that's the solution to it," Lee said.

The grant will go to Hamilton Family Services, Larkin Street Youth Center and HandUp, a crowd-sourcing website for homeless and others in need.

Justin Steele of Google's Bay Area Giving philanthropic arm said his company wants to give back.

"This is our community. These are our neighbors. Google's been doing a lot of listening to try to understand how we can make the Bay Area better," he said.

Google claims to have given $100 million to Bay Area nonprofits since 2010.
