Golden Gate Bridge Lane Configuration To Change During Commute Hours

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- The Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District has elected to reconfigure the lanes available on the bridge during the evening commute hours Monday through Friday starting in January.

Bridge management determined that under the current configuration four northbound lanes and two southbound lanes - congestion was reduced for northbound drivers but significantly increased for southbound drivers.

The configuration was part of a pilot program that began in September to reconfigure the lanes based on growing Bay Area traffic, seasonal traffic patterns and the completion of major roadwork on the Presidio Parkway project, according to district officials.

The new configuration will be reset to allow three northbound lanes and three southbound lanes Monday through Wednesday. The current configuration will remain active on Thursdays and Fridays between 4:30 p.m.  and 5:30 p.m.

The district will continue to monitor the impact these changes have on traffic and commute times, and will review the data in April 2016.
