'Goats Gone Wild' Through Berkeley Hills Clear Brush, Reduce Fire Danger, 'Fertilize' Hillside
BERKELEY HILLS (KCBS) -- Berkeley Lab's annual goat herding through the hills above Centennial Drive delayed traffic briefly Friday afternoon, but drivers were treated to an impressive show as hundreds of goats raced across traffic lanes to continue chomping their way through the tinder-dry Berkeley Hills.
The goats are an environmentally friendly and extremely effective way of control weeds.
The laboratory uses goat herders every year for this purpose, but it hasn't always been caught on camera quite so spectacularly.
The Berkeley Lab communication department posted the video to Facebook, saying, "Goats gone wild! We utilize goats at the lab in order to keep our grasses short and reduce fire hazards. In this video the goats are being herded (wait for dog at end) to the tree laden hill just below our Blackberry Gate."
