GM, Lyft To Test Fleet Of Self-Driving Electric Taxis

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) – General Motors and Lyft are reportedly planning to start testing a fleet of self-driving taxis within the next year.

The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday that the plan would involve a public taxi service in a city that hasn't yet been disclosed.

The details are still being worked out, but according to the Journal, the program would let Lyft customers choose a car with a driver or an autonomous vehicle via the Lyft app.

No word at this point on how the two companies would handle regulatory issues surrounding fully autonomous vehicles.

The program would rely on the Chevy Bolt, an all-electric car due to ship later this year.

Thursday's announcement comes a few months after GM invested $500 million in San Francisco-based Lyft, and spent $1 billion buying another San Francisco company, Cruise Automation.
