Giants Sign Veteran Infielder Dan Uggla To Minor-League Contract
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- The San Francisco Giants have signed veteran second baseman Dan Uggla Monday to a minor-league contract, according to published reports.
Fox Sports first reported the signing three days after the infielder was released by the Atlanta Braves. Uggla cleared waivers on Monday.
The three-time All-Star has struggled in 2014 on the heels of a sub-par 2013 season, hitting only .162 with two home runs and 10 RBI.
Uggla underwent corrective eye surgery last summer but has yet to regain his All-Star form, highlighted by a 33-game hitting streak in 2011.
The Giants have been platooning several players at the second base position, including 23-year-old rookie Joe Panik, following injuries to veteran Marco Scutaro.
The Braves are still on the hook for Uggla's salary of $18 million for this season and next season. The Giants will only have to pay the league's prorated minimum salary should Uggla make the team.
